Participants in either master class can attend the conference for a discounted fee of £145.

Master Classes
Master classes are open to glass artists, painters, sculptors, craft artists, architects, designers and others who wish to explore the technical and artistic potential of glass either on its own or in combination with other materials. All classes are juried and subject to a minimum and maximum enrolment.

Master Class Format
Each class will begin on the first day at 9am with studio orientation and conclude at 5pm on the final day. The studio will be open the following day from 9am-12 noon for the collection of work.

Applications Guidelines
To apply please send the following:

  • A brief CV outlining your previous experience.
  • A short statement (maximum 1 page) outlining the benefit of the class selected to your artistic practice.
  • Five images of recent work, either in slide or CD format. Each image should be numbered to correspond with the image information sheet.
  • On the image information sheet please include your name, number of images, title, date made, dimensions and techniques.
  • Booking form.
  • If possible please also send a copy of your application by e-mail to: info@northlandsglass.com. Text files should be in word format.

Application Deadline
All applications materials should arrive in the North Lands office by 31 March 2008. Allocation of class places will be at the discretion of the Selection Committee. If you are allocated a place you will be sent an invoice, further information on accommodation and travel directions.

Late Applications
North Lands will continue to accept applications after 31 March. Applications received after the deadline will be processed in the order they are received if space is available and until all classes are filled. If space is not available an applicant's name will be placed on a waiting list. Please be prepared to respond quickly should a place become available.

Annual Conference
The Annual Conference is intended for glass and other artists, architects and designers, gallery owners, curators and others interested in creative glass. On receipt of your booking form an invoice and further information on accommodation and travel directions.

Funding Assistance / Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships and grants are available for both master classes and conference attendance.

  • Professional artists from Scotland may apply directly to North Lands Creative Glass for Scottish Arts Council funding towards their attendance costs. Full-time students are not eligible for this funding.
  • Other UK and overseas participants are encouraged to apply to their local Arts Councils for assistance towards costs.
  • Full-time students (both from UK and overseas) may apply to the Friends of North Lands Student Scholarship Fund for funding towards their costs.
  • Funding and scholarships are awarded on merit to those artists and students working in glass or in any other area of the arts.

Please note on your booking form if you are applying for funding assistance and whether or not you will be able to attend North Lands if you do not receive funding assistance under 'additional information'.


Teaching Assistantships
A number of teaching assistantship positions are open to qualified artists and students. Participation as a teaching assistant affords the opportunity to gain valuable career experience and to develop individual abilities as a teacher or technician.
To apply send the following to arrive in the North Lands office by 31 March 2008:
  • A brief CV outlining your previous experience
  • A short statement(maximum one page) outlining the benefit of assisting the class you have selected to your artistic practice.
  • Five images of recent work, either in slide or CD format. Each image should be numbered to correspond with the image information.
  • Image information sheet. Please include your name, number of image, title, date made, dimensions and techniques.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Booking form
  • If possible please also send a copy of your application by e-mail to: info@northlandsglass.com. Text files should be in word format.
  • Please note on your booking form whether or not you will be able to attend North Lands as a student if you do not receive an assistantship.


Refunds and Cancellations
North Lands makes a substantial investment when organising the master class programmes and vacancies can be hard to fill at short notice even if there is a waiting list. Therefore, if a cancellation is received up to 45 days prior to a class start date the full fee less a £45 cancellation fee will be refunded. A cancellation received less than 45 days but more than 21 days prior to the start of class will receive a refund of 50% of the class fee less the £45 cancellation fee. There will be no refund for cancellations received less than 21 days prior to the start of a class.

Master Class 'Add-ons'
North Lands is happy to offer discounted rental 'add-ons' to master class students and teaching assistants who may wish to rent time to explore further what was taught in class. Please contact North Lands Administrative Manager for details.

Nearest airport: Wick (14 miles from Lybster)
Nearest train station: Wick

BUT it is cheaper and more convenient to travel by coach, train or air to Inverness from which Citylink operates buses to Thurso via Lybster. The journey from Inverness takes 2 and a half hours and calls at the Portland Arms Hotel. The last bus from Inverness is at 6.30pm Citylink telephone number; 00 44 (0)8705 505050
