2009 INTERNATIONAL MASTER CLASSES AND CONFERENCE
Session 1
3rd - 11th July: Bullseye Master Class with Jane Bruce & Bruno Romanelli (kiln formed)
'Light + Colour = Form' In this class Jane and Bruno will aim to strike a balance between hands-on making, drawing, thinking, talking and working from direct experience of the local North Lands and Caithness environment. Focused on kiln forming, Bullseye glass and kiln casting will be the material and process through which the North Lands light and colour will be investigated, manipulated and modulated to give ideas form and life.
Session 2
25th August - 3rd September: Kaffe Fasset & Steve Klein (kiln casting and slumping)
'Colour and Texture' Kaffe and Steve, two artists working in different media come together in this class to bring new thinking about colour, texture and transparency to the world of glass. Kafe Fassett is a textile artist and designer renowned for his unique sense of colour and drive to create. Steve Klein, the California based glass artist, is intrigued by basic geometric shapes, minimal colour, line, texture and their functions and meanings.
Session 3
30th August - 3rd September: Udo Zembok (kiln forming and fusing)
'Colour Saturation' Udo and the class will concentrate on thoughts about the power of colour and transparency in a medium that lends itself like no other to these two. He is known for the intensity and luminosity of colour which he brings to his monolithic glass colour field compositions and will share with the class his experience of making colour in glass an emotional force.
Session 4
8th - 16th September: Dana Zámecníková/Mieke Groot (blown glass/plus)
'Approaches to Colour' In the class led by Mieke and Dana, two internationally known artists, will combine their very different talents to excite and inspire others. The Dutch artist Mieke Groot is known for her blown and enamel painted glass forms, whilst Dana Zámecníková uses computer generated imagery on layered glass to create a theatrical narrative. Many different techniques and colour possibilities will be explored in a new light.
Session 5
8th - 16th September: Therman Statom (flat glass and painting)
'A personal language of Colour and Transparency' The glass artist Thermon Statom is known for his very personal approach to creating art by playing with colour, found objects and mixed media. He will share his thoughts and many years of experience in a class where experiment and personal expression will be the keynotes.
International Conference: 5th - 6th September
'Colour & Transparency' The two day conference, will examine many different approaches to colour and transparency. Speakers on the topic include the Master Class leaders (except Jane Bruce and Bruno Romanelli), Professor Clare Johnston, Head of Textiles Department at the RCA, Elizabeth Conran, Art Historian and Museum Curator and Ann Vanlatum, Artistic Director, Sars-Poteries.
