North Lands Creative Glass
Master Classes 2007: Session 1| In the environs of North Lands prehistoric man left signs and monuments, which reach out to us today like messages still waiting to be deciphered. Local history, landscape, space and time will be the points of departure for the 'journey' that will define this master class. The meaning of 'place' and of 'feeling at home' in the age of globalization will be examined, together with the question of whether or not a sense of belonging attaches itself strictly to a birthplace or extends to places inhabited by our ancestors 3-4,000 years ago. Utilizing a precise place, the North Lands environment, students will be encouraged to create objects and small installations that investigate the relationship between place and identity. The exchange of ideas and perspectives between class participants will be an integral part of the class and lay the foundation for the artistic ventures of all concerned. Kilnforming glass in open-faced moulds from clay models and found objects will be the technique used to translate ideas into glass. |

Silvia Levenson's kiln-cast glass objects are metaphors for tumultuous emotions underlying otherwise cosy domestic environments. Her narratives contain a dark and subtle humour, as well as a quintessential quality that makes the work seem personal and truthful. Levenson fled from her home in Buenos Aires during the dictatorship of 1976-84 and immigrated to Italy where she currently resides. Her work has gained an international audience and is included in many prominent glass collections such as the Glas Museum Fraueneau, Germany, and the Corning Museum of Glass, USA. |
| Applications for this class are encouraged from artists and sculptors from all media, with or without glass experience, who are interested in exploring issues of identity through the process of kilnformed glass. |  Cast glass, found metal |
