Building of Form

Master Classes 2010: Session 3

ANNA MATOUŠKOVÁ: 'Building of Form'
25 August - 2 September

The workshop will focus on abstract, conceptual and sculpural work by starting with what I call the basic architecture of shape. I will explain to you in understandable terms what I mean by the term 'the building of form', after which we will make experiments with each participant building up their own 3 dimensional forms either in clay or in another suitable material. This we will, so far as possible, do in teamwork. While doing so we will share discussions, new ideas, many thoughts, and we will also make sure to learn valuable lessons from our mistakes, which are inevitable in new processes. We will be drawing and painting also to inform this process. These preparatory steps will guide us to the making of our moulds for solid glass castings or slumping. Previous glass experience is not required, however some previous art experience is. Fine art students without any glass-technical experience are very welcome.

Anna Matoušková would like to exchange email with those who will be taking her workshop so that both she and the participants are fully prepared for the experience we will share. At the end of our session we will work together to create an exhibition of our results.

The abstract conceptual work of Anna Matoušková consists of drawings, paintings in acrylics and impressive cast glass sculptures. In her architectonic conceptualisation, she explores spacial relationships and the order, the multiplication and the transformation of forms that emerge from rational consideration and which are governed by proportion. Anna Matoušková is the daughter of artist-parents and she studied Architecture and Design at the School of Applied Arts in Prague, under Stanislav Libensky, Jaroslav Scoboda and Vladimir Kopecky. Grounded in a fertile historical culture, she has been involved, as a member of the so-called 'Angry Generation of Students', in the struggle to free art from the constraints imposed on it by the former totalitarian regime of her country. Her work has been exhibited in Europe, the United States and Asia and is included in several public and private collections.
