North Lands Creative Glass
Master Classes 2007: Session 4| Shadows and reflections are intrinsically part of our perception of glass. In this master class we will focus on these two aspects of the medium as a starting point for the artistic exploration of the local landscape. Both the reflected image and the shadow cast by an object imply a transformation of reality. The impact of shadow and visual illusion on spatial perception will also be examined in depth. Sketching and drawing, combined with digital photography and collage, will help students examine the natural environment from a fresh perspective (please bring digital cameras). Techniques in flat glass imaging and collage - sandblasting, layering and black enamel painting - will be demonstrated and explored. Methods for bonding and assembling three dimensional and spatial constructions comprised of flat glass will be presented for experiment. Collaborative work, discussions and presentations should encourage students to explore the relationship between landscape and the reflected image. Applications for thisclass are encouraged from artists and sculptors of all media, who are interested in working at the juncture between contemporary glass sculpture and innovative three dimensional design. | ![]() Ann Wolff |

Ann Wolff who lives in Berlin and Gotland, Sweden, is internationally known as one of the founders of the European Studio Glass Movement. Spanning four decades, her work in glass reflects her unceasing ability to reinvent herself. Wolff's work is included in museums and collections around the world. Her success has not beguiled her into repetition: she has always insisted on investigating radically new techniques and media. |
| This course should be understood in this context: the course will be taught in collaboration with the Berlinbased architects Jean-Marc Abcarius (born in Beirut) and Christopher Burns (born in Los Angeles). Exploring the themes of transparency, transformation and cultural (non)integration, their prizewinning urbane living projects have been widely published and exhibited internationally. Known for their sensitive contemporary interventions in historical context, their work is often concerned with the positive tension between the visible and the hidden, between public and private space and behaviour. In 1998 they began a collaboration with Wolff, which has over time been extended to several projects |
