Master Classes 2010: Session 5| Preconception is the enemy of the imagination and this is most apparent when dealing with the human figure as it can be difficult to move away from the conventional and idealistic form. With this statement in mind, this class will look at the potential of abstracting and simplifying the figure. |  |

You will be asked to collect beforehand newspaper images of people, heads and expressions to help initiate ideas and we will use vigorous drawing and modelling sessions to investigate and develop these ideas. Using different mould making methods we will explore the vast opportunities of lost wax casting and other glass casting techniques to make small sculptural glass pieces that have a narrative created by you. To help this whole process along we will take full advantage of the beautiful local landscape to clear our minds and help with inspiration. Whilst a previous knowledge of modelling and casting can be of use, a healthy imagination is the most important thing as the aim of this class is to increase your creativity. |
| For well over four decades David Reekie has been both artistically and technically a true innovator in the field of glass. He studied Glass and Ceramics at Stourbridge College of Art and lectured for 10 years at North Staffordshire Polytechnic until he moved in 1986 to Norwich where he set up his studio. A central theme of David's work is the threat that modern life poses to our individuality and to the natural world. His work more often than not, begins with a drawing which he translates into three-dimensional forms in cast glass. David has exhibited, lectured and taught extensively all over the world and his works are held in numerous public and private collections world wide. |  |
