KILNFORMING & KILN CASTING RESIDENCY - 3 April - 28 May 2008
North Lands Creative Glass is offering a eight-week residency for four talented glass artists. The North Lands Alastair Pilkington Studio enables the artists-in-residence to benefit from a wide range of facilities.
Nature of the Residency
- The Residency provides eight weeks free access to all areas of the studio except the hot glass workshop. These include the kiln room, mould room, cold, working facilities and general purpose/drawing room and all related tools and equipment.
- North Lands does not have a limitless budget for the provision of materials but we would endeavour to provide most basic materials. The Residency will be focusing primarily on kiln working (fusing, slumping, casting, painting etc.) and Residents will receive an allowance in kiln working materials up to the value of £300 i.e. glass and mould making materials.
- Individual residents will be responsible for providing any specialist materials e.g. casting glass other than that provided, Bullseye sheet or frit etc. A list of British suppliers can be provided upon request.
- A stipend of £400 is provided to assist with travel and living expenses
- Residents are expected to be proficient in the processes and techniques discussed in their residency application.
- During the period of the residency it is incumbent on each resident to communicate, aid and assist his or her fellow residents in an open and friendly manner. This interaction and exchange is seen as being one of the benefits and challenges of the residency period.
- The North Lands Technician is responsible for the safe running and maintenance of the workshops and whilst he will be available to advise on equipment usage etc., he is not a technical assistant for residents.
- Each Resident is required to contribute up to a maximum of one day a week to the cultural activity of North Lands and its outreach programme.
- Each Resident is required to donate one piece for inclusion in the North Lands Permanent Collection. This should represent their achievement during the residency.
- Each artist should provide a short report on their experiences during the residency and photographs of three items made during, or as a result of the time spent at Northlands. These are for use in future publicity of the Centre.
- Residents are requested to acknowledge their residency in exhibitions and lectures, and they will act as ambassadors for North Lands in their future glass careers.
- If the residents wish to display and/or sell their work North Lands Creative Glass will provide exhibition space during their residency. Further details and exhibition terms can be obtained from Lorna MacMillan.
Accommodation
- A four-bedroom house or four-bedroom flat is provided free of charge as part of the residency. The four residents, however, will be jointly responsible for covering the cost of domestic utilities that are used during their residency; this will be calculated on a weekly basis at the actual cost charged to North Lands.
- The period of the residency is granted to the named resident only, partners and other makers are not allowed to work in the studio during this time. Residencies are a time of intense concentrated activity for all concerned, therefore, partners are not encouraged to visit for more than a couple of days. They will be responsible for their own meals and there will be a nominal fee for accommodation. Please note that many times it is impossible to accommodate guest partners in the North Lands residencies.
- Residents are expected to fully commit their time to the residency period. Any prior commitments which would result in extended periods of absence should be noted and agreed before taking up the residency.
The residency programme is supported by the Scottish Arts Council and HIE Caithness and Sutherland. Additional funding for artists may be available for artists from their national or regional arts and crafts councils.
