Residencies
Residencies
Our residencies run in spring and autumn each year. Each residency brings four glass and visual artists, at different stages of their career, to live and work together here for eight weeks, or here and another venue for mixed-media partnership residencies. Through collaboration, cross fertilisation of ideas and practice, the residency creates new opportunities for learning, exploration and creative development.
Residents come from the UK and overseas and this international blend of ideas and talent is one of the key strengths of the residencies. Our Alastair Pilkington Studio enables the artists in residence to benefit from a wide range of facilities. Artists often cite their residency as a seminal moment in their work, where the space and time afforded at North Lands Creative Glass has led to a new body of work, or new direction which has significantly influenced their work. You can see images from past residencies in our Flickr sets
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Mixed-media Residency
24 September – 23 November 2012
North Lands Creative Glass and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop are working in partnership to offer a nine-week residency for four visual artists. We are looking for two sculptors and two glass artists who have an interest in exploring new forms of making through collaboration. A high level of experience in hot casting processes either in metal or glass is preferable.
The residency will offer the opportunity to create work and collaborate with artists while also learning and sharing techniques and methods of working with different materials. Artists will be selected by North Lands Creative Glass and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and the residency time will be split between the two venues. This opportunity will allow you to enhance your own practice while working within a peer group to gain further skills. Both venues enable artists-in-residence to benefit from a comprehensive range of facilities. Artists will receive a stipend of £700 and a materials allowance.
This residency is part of Creative Scotland’s Creative Futures programme

Applications must be received by 31 May

General Information/Terms and Conditions:
- Residencies provide access to the North Lands Creative Glass studio and particular areas will, or will not be available depending on the nature of the residency. A week at the beginning of the residency provides time for preparation and planning with a further week at the end of the residency for final finishing and for an exhibition of work produced during the residency.
- North Lands Creative Glass does not have a limitless budget for the provision of materials but we would endeavour to provide most basic materials. On acceptance of the residency, a tailor made materials quota will be arranged with each resident, along with a range of other basic materials.
- The individual resident prior to arrival should purchase any specialist glass making materials, such as colour rod or frits, for individual projects. A list of British suppliers can be provided upon request.
- A stipend is provided to assist with travel and living expenses and is stated on residency advertisements.
- Residents are expected to be proficient in the processes and techniques discussed in their residency application.
- During the period of the residency it is incumbent on each resident to communicate, aid and assist his or her fellow residents in an open and friendly manner. This interaction and exchange is seen as being one of the benefits and challenges of the residency period.
- The North Lands Creative Glass Technical Manager is responsible for the safe running and maintenance of the workshops and whilst he will be available to advise on equipment usage etc. he is not a technical assistant for residents.
- Each Resident is required to contribute up to a maximum of one day a week to the cultural activity of North Lands Creative Glass and its outreach programme.
- Each Resident is required to donate one piece for inclusion in the North Lands Creative Glass Permanent Collection. This should represent their achievement during the residency.

- If the residents wish to display and/or sell their work North Lands Creative Glass will provide exhibition space during their residency.
Accommodation
- A four-bedroom house or four-bedroom flat is provided free of charge as part of the residency. The four residents, however, will be jointly responsible for covering the cost of domestic utilities that are used during their residency; this will be calculated on a weekly basis at the actual cost charged to North Lands.
- Residents are expected to fully commit their time to the residency period. Any prior commitments which would result in extended periods of absence should be noted and agreed before taking up the residency.
- The period of the residency is granted to the named resident only, partners and other makers are not allowed to work in the studio during this time. Residencies are a time of intense concentrated activity for all concerned, therefore, partners are not encouraged to visit for more than a couple of days. They will be responsible for their own meals and there will be a nominal fee for accommodation. Please note that many times it is impossible to accommodate guest partners in the North Lands residencies.
The residency programme is supported by the Creative Scotland and HIE Caithness & Sutherland. Additional funding for artists may be available for artists from their national or regional arts and crafts councils.
